The Two Joe Quesada Questions

Since a few people want to know what they would have been, I'll share them here...despite the fact that I'm sure it will be anticlimactic, though.

Yes or No Question 1: Was Marvel behind the Marvel_b0y blog at any point in its existence?

Glaringly obvious question, no? But I didn't catch anyone asking it or hear anything about it. With all the accusations about it, Marvel hasn't seemed to address it at all. I know I posted a question about it on Marvel.com for the MySpace Cup of Joe. I don't think I was the only one. So, I feel asking this would have been at least a little confrontational to a guy who was running a fairly feel-good panel at the time.

Yes or No Question 2: Did you get a Screen Actors Guild card for your work in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back?

This is the beating of the dead horse. But the fact remains that he had a speaking role in a Hollywood release. Normally, that requires you either being in SAG or paying for SAG membership. That would put the crossing the line to appear on Colbert in a completely different light, regardless of whether he let his membership lapse. But, being that it had nothing to do with comics and wasn't a friendly question, I didn't feel like changing the mood of the whole panel.

Everyone seems to think that I'm enough of an attention whore to have no care about screwing up a panel for other attendees or to stalk people for a response. Not me. I made an attempt to put out feelers for the Joe questions that would get to someone in a position with Marvel that would give it a chance at happening in the right circumstances. Either the info didn't get to them or they had no interest whatsoever. And thats...ok. ;)

  1. Actually, you don't NEED a SAG card in order to get a speaking role in a film. What you need is to FIRST have a speaking role cred in order to GET your SAG card (there's another way to get your SAG card, but it involves being an extra and is off-topic in this discussion). But this is nigh impossible for a regular Joe or Jane to get speaking part without a card, unless you've got connections.

    I was an extra in "Mars Attacks!" (barely discernible and only mildly visible in the letterboxed version for all of about 3 seconds) and I remember a non-SAG member getting like 3 words for a scene. She was all excited because she could now get her card (whether she made the final cut, I can't recall).

  2. That's why Kevin is treated like such an idiot by the industry--because he has a superficial "idea" of how he "thinks" the real world works.

    That's only 5% of what is actually wrong with him though.

    He's a complete sociopath and loser.

    He's a jaded fan who has attempted a number of "short cuts" to try and get into the industry--only to fail miserably.

    That and he doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut--I was glad to see him be quiet and keep to himself in NY.

  3. Is comment number 3 by Dan Slott? It sounds like his usual ranting. Dan should worry more about his blood pressure medicine and getting his scripts in on time than bashing Huxford.

    If Huxford is such a nobody, why waste time on him?

    And I love how many people on message boards are psychiatric professionals. "He's a sociopath!" Oh my God, run! Kevin Huxford is destroying the East Coast! Oh my God, Kevin Huxford is going to co-opt post-War Germany for his own twisted use! Oh my God, what makes me so much fucking better if I'm on HIS BLOG bitching?

  5. Actually, someone asked the Marvel Boy question at the Secret Invasion panel. Quesada said that they weren't behind it. You can read the Newsarama coverage about it.

    And the second question was already answered, so I guess both those questions would have been a waste of time.

  6. One of the reasons I have more respect for Kevin then all of his detractors combined is that he has an opinion and he’s not afraid to stand behind it. Shame on you Anonymous for claiming to see him in NY, yet not approaching him to tell him to his FACE that you think he is a loser.

    Do you realize how PATHETIC it looks for you to come here and call him names? You should have done it in person.

    I just don’t get that. If I wanted to call someone names, I wouldn’t do it on a blog’s comment section. I would tell them to their face.

  7. Wait a second...if--according to Poster #3-- Hux is completely (ergo 100%) "sociopath and loser" AND 5% "superficially knowledgable", well, hell. He's 105%!! That damn near qualifies him as a metahuman (or a mutant). Either Poster #3 is part moron (greater than or equal to 51%) or he's invoking his inner Yogi Berra to belch that chunk of stupid and make us ALL dumber for having read it.

    Not for nothing, and Hux can certainly stand up for himself, but what certainly burns my grits is some hero who comes along, spews vitriol and venom, and doesn't even have the BALLS to post under an identity. Anonymous equals pussy, jack-ass. Be a man (or woman if you are so genetically inclined) and announce yourself instead hiding.

  8. The controversial subject of purported disgruntled Marvel employee "Marvel_B0y" was breached - "Was that you guys playing a joke on us," a fan asked. "No, it wasn't," Quesada answered succinctly.

    Frag, part of why I wanted to specifically ask a YES/NO question of my own phrasing is because I can see exactly how Joe could "lawyer" his way around that question without his given answer being a lie. I have solid, reliable info that demonstrates Marvel_b0y to have been the work of Marvel employees. So, while I wouldn't say Joe's answer is a lie, I would say it is creative truth-telling.

    The other question was answered? Not quite. The astute Dr. Jeff did give us info on the SAG card process, but it didn't answer whether Joe signed up for one at all. That's not even bringing up his writing credits on the PAINKILLER JANE TV movie and series that may or may not have involved WGA membership for a period of time.

    And I love all my anonymous haters. They don't seem to realize how they immediately defeat their point by posting here. They have all this grumbling about how no one cares about me or what I've said. It is amazing how those that scream the loudest about no one caring don't seem to realize their actions invalidate their own arguments.

    It's nice to see some of the big dumb animals that stop by, but I'll have to delete that "f--- off" post...anonymous, adds nothing, and is really just a post better suited for the haters blog. ;)

    Don't forget that anonymous posting could also be perpetrated by Steve Ekstrom. That guy REALLY hates Huxford. I think he's the one who posted the anti-Huxford stuff at MarvelB0y, mainly because he was trying to pass off inside knowledge of how the Best Shots group at Newsarama operates.

    I wonder if that's because Huxford publically outed him as the only person to get kicked off the Best Shots team. And that kinda begs the question: Ekstrom got kicked off, and Huxford didn't? What the hell did Ekstrom do? Shit . . . for that matter, what happened to Koben Kelly?

    uhm, it looks like a bunch of people disagree with Hux. Sometimes anonymous posters post anonymously because they just don't give a shit enough to open themselves up for the crazy online games that these things lead to. If you use a real name, you're accused of using a fake name. If you have a readily identifiable online history, you'll have stalkers going through that history and dredging up anything that ever happened to anyone with that name.

    These anonymous haters don't need to be the great and mighty enemies of the empire. They could easily be people who've hated Hux for other reasons but aren't usually bothered to get into th craziness that is a peniswagging fight wtih him... ie, someone says shit about Hux and the first response is anonymous mudslinging suggesting it's Slott despite no proof. The average guy may not want to spend the rest of their google cached days being accused of assinine statements because they disagreed with Hux in the past and people can't get over the fight.

    And Dr. Jeff, you can be 100% something, and then 5% something else. And complete doesn't always mean absolute or 100%. A guy can be a complete man's man, but that doesn't mean there's no estrogen or that he hasn't watched Grey's Anatomy. A guy can be a complete ass but still love his mother. Back to the stats though, a guy can be 100% crazy and 5% homicidal.

    In this case, however, he didn't say 5% superficially knowledgeable though. He said there's a lot wrong with Hux, 5% of which is that he's treated like an idiot because of the way he thinks the real world works. The other 95% of what's wrong with him could include the 100% sociopath and loser ratings.

    And in general, loser, sociopathic, and superficially knowledgeable (which indicates that he knows the surface of the matter... enough to look like he knows what he's talking about, which is different than Anon1's post that Hux has an idea of how things work but that such an idea is superficial) are not mutually exclusive. Further examples of the concept: a board that is 100% wood, 95% dark brown, 100% maple, 30% water damaged... OMG that board is 325% reality is melting that guy has no concept of percentages.

    And on the subject of anonymity, stop acting like a screen name makes you any less anonymous. You regret some statements you made? You just start posting as DrJ. Jeff. JEFFPHD. JeffPDF. Dashizz. Does your "name" identify you? No. you could be Dr. Jeff the Biggest Loser season 2 candidate, or Dr. Jeff the vet, or Dr. Jeff the pioneer of skin treatment.

    "Stan Lee (sometimes)", I can't for the life of me understand the need to nitpick that percentages thing for several paragraphs.

    And the anonymous vs screen name thing? There's a world of difference. If you have a screen name, there's some amount of accountability. Heck, if you even just post with the "anonymous" feature and actually just type the same name (OTHER THAN ANONYMOUS) each time, there's some amount of accountability.

    I'm letting anonymous people post here out of respect for people who just don't want to register. Michael Lorah is a friend of mine, for instance, and I'll take people screwing up the signal to noise radio in order to let people like him drop a note on any blog that catches his eye.

    So, we'll still see plenty of anonymous losers make nonsense comments like "Kevin is treated like such an idiot by the industry". Of course, that's probably someone who previously said the industry doesn't even know about me...which would be a touch inconsistent and one of those times where it'd be nice to be able to tie together statements.

    Oh...and I haven't tried any shortcuts to get into the industry. I never once approached Troy Brownfield to try to get a gig with Fangoria when they had their comics line, unlike others I know. I never tried to turn a contact with a pro into trying to kiss their ass long enough to get a gig (and, no, that's not JUST a reference to Ekstrom). Hell, when I started working with Best Shots, Troy approached me, not the other way around. Part of why things got so bad between me and Ekstrom was because I had no respect for how he was treating teammates as stepping stones to bigger and better things.

    I try to avoid anything that seems like calling in favors or taking shortcuts.

  16. Why is Huxford treated as if he is part of the industry by his detracters and sycophants/aliases alike? He's not, he blogs about comics becasue I assume he likes them. That doesn't mean he has any influence or importance in the industry at all. I have to second the notion that Anonymous posters have no integrity or courage of their convictions. This is the fucking internet, and this is nothing more than comics commentary, if you think you need a pedigree and a real name to discuss it, then you are a sad POS indeed.

    As for Joe Q., Huxford's admitting that he would've been civil and respectful to him had he won the dinner or gotten to ask his questions is the first indication that I got that he may be an actual real person and not just an internet front for false bravado and internal neurosis. (i.e. an anonymous poster)

    Me? I'm easy to please. A Mets World Series championship in 2008, a Rocketeer comic revival, Ted Kord kept alive in the Booster Gold series, and my son Tyler making the travel team as a pitcher and I'm happy as a clam.

    Quick answers on WGA/SAG.

    You don't need a SAG or WGA card to have a speaking role and/or write a movie. You don't need to apply for one either.

    Given some discretion, producers can hire non-union members for some roles. They usually sign some sort of agreement with SAG to do so, informing them of who these people are. It's pretty standard, most of this information is on the respective websites.

    Same goes for writers.

    One has to have a speaking role in a widely distributed movie, or sell a script/do some work on a script on a widely distributed movie in order to qualify to be a union member in the first place. They are not considered scabs when this is done.

    WGA and SAG membership allows for certain benefits. They negotiate contracts and minimums available to its members. And it's much more difficult to do so without a membership card in the first place.

    You'd have to be somewhat well known to pull it off. Or known in a certain industry to do so.

    Really, most of this info is available either via a website or a phone call.
