WGBGB: Because Andy Asked For It

OK...Andy wants a weekly feature of my examining some of the silliness that is Valerie's blog, with Frag It hopefully giving me the business for it.

Thankfully, I don't even have to pick from one of her new blogs, even if she has some good ones to pick from there. Mining the same blog where she tries to imply I'm a stalker of creators who might do them harm, there's a nice little exchange in the comments. Are any of them hers? No...but this deserves special attention because of her moderation of almost any comments critical of her.

A slight tangent- You know what a nice well moderated forum for fan/creator interaction is? Letters pages in comic books.

Sure, a lot of them end up being two pages of "Wow, that issue three-five months ago was so cool!" but- given the quality of correspondence- they can be as thought-provoking and interesting as the issue itself, and some even elevated to legendary. (The letters column from The Question for example).

I don't know if anyone here recalls the letters The Walking Dead received following what I shall euphemistically refer to as the "Michonne Incident" accusing Robert Kirkman of racism, sexism, and worse. The discussion was rather heated, but I did feel as though that having the letters printed meant that the creators were taking the issues under discussion seriously- print carries a legitimacy and permanancy that blogs and boards don't always have.

Sorry to wander off topic there.

Very true. It was classy of Kirkman to print the opinions that questioned his stance on the matter, rather than filling up the letters pages with "Gosh, Rob, you're so great."

There's far too many pundits who edit the missives of their audience to back up their own opinions (while claiming to be interested in debate), and it's good to see the medium of comic books has a few voices of sanity making the effort to offset the more vocal weasels.

The bolding on that last part is purely mine, for emphasis. That post is either evidence that Valerie's become more interested in opening herself up for debate over there...or that she was oblivious to that likely being a slight on pundits that includes her in that group.

Guess which option I'm going with? ;)

  1. Well I've apparently become a part of this blog in a way so I don't want to disappoint Andy.

But the truth is I have nothing to say about this posting other than to advise khux to discuss Val's blog whenever there is something of interest, because this was pretty boring.

  2. Letters pages? Really? I disagree with that assertion entirely -- letters pages are practically obsolete now that many creators have their own message boards.

Of course, if that creator wields dictatorial control over the board ... well, I won't go there before somebody acuss ME of having an axe to grind. ;)

  3. Frag: I'll do better next time, I promise.

Spider: Ah, c'mon...as long as you keep it brief and don't do two blogs a week on it, no one will accuse you of having an ax to grind. :)

  4. You forgot a couple of options:

    1. She let that comment in so as to appear as if she actually is open to dissenting opinions, when really, it's a pretty harmless comment;

    2. She's completely myopic and doesn't realize that she's censoring her critics.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, though. While I certainly believe she has a huge ax to grind with you, in this instance, I think she's just allowing for an open debate.

  5. woo hoo!

Just be patient, something more exciting will pop up I imagine. Maybe a strict weekly schedule isn't that necessary, we don't want to turn it into Countdown.

I guess with the new moderation at OS there won't be any meltdowns in the comments sections anymore though, fortunately/unfortunately.

  6. Hey I think I got my post "modded" at OS?

We'll see it might show up later, lol.

All I said was that the when fangirls attack link was still up on her links section and that WFA was boring.

    P.S. Its a conspiracy!

It is preferred that you sign some sort of name to your posts, rather than remain completely anonymous. Even if it is just an internet nickname/alias, it makes it easier to get to know the people that post here. I hope you all will give it some consideration. Thank you.
